Some dreams lift us with wings. Some dreams lift us with wonder.
Avery is a little chickie in a feed-store shoebox, and she has one very big wish: she wants to fly. She watches the swallows go looping overhead. She watches the sparrows dart and the geese cut their V through the wide blue sky. She flaps with all her might — but her small webbed feet stay right there in the straw.
It isn't fair. It isn't easy. And Avery feels all of it.
But then something surprising happens. A happy little teacher named Mrs. Mudd reaches into that shoebox and lifts Avery and her sisters and brothers out of the feedlot and into a bright classroom full of light, learning, and belonging. Avery still can't fly with her wings — but she can listen, and she can learn, and she can imagine. And it turns out that wonder can carry a small chickie just as high as any pair of feathers ever could.
Avery the Shoebox Chickie is a warm, gently rhyming Mudpies Universe story for children ages 3–8 — a book about longing for something you cannot have, finding what you already carry, and discovering that belonging can feel an awful lot like flight.
This story was grown from two real memories: an Iowa farm boy who knew the weight of a shoebox full of chicks, and a kindergarten classroom where that same shoebox arrived one morning and changed the whole day. That boy grew up to be Pop-Pop — and this book is his way of handing those memories forward.
Mrs. Mudd makes her return in this Mudpies story, lifting small things toward the light the way she always does.
Includes a Grown-Up Corner with discussion questions and four creative activities for classroom and home use.
